Kaine Cuts Update- DOC Says 95% of Laid Off People Will Be Rehired
Tonight during our 11pm newscast we will take a closer look at Tim Kaine’s proposed cuts to the State Budget. During our look at the layoffs we talked to officials of the Department of Corrections who told us that they have been preparing for these cuts for sometime. They revealed that they have held off filling 1,200 positions and plan to move the vast majority of those people laid off into new positions in other parts of the agency.
Most of the layoffs come from 6 different facilities in the DOC system that will be shut down. DOC’s goal is to move many of those laid off to new positions withing 50 miles of where the currently work.
DOC will hold onto to those vacanices, which are above and beyond the open positions that Governor Kaine plans to eliminate from the system, in anticipation of more cuts to come. Kaine hinted today that depending on the progression of the financial crisis, this may only be the beginning of state workers who lose their jobs.
