**NBC12 Speaks One on One with Sen. Joe Biden**
Today I spoke with Sen. Joe Biden, the Democratic nominee for Vice President. NBC12 was the only station in Richmond granted a one on one interview on the same day as Governor Sarah Palin’s visit to town. You can see my story from our early evening newscast in the video player on decisionvirginia.com. We had a wide ranging discussion on a number of topics. I will post video from parts of the interview later tonight, but here is a transcript of what he had to say on some of the things we discussed.
On the comparison of the scrutiny given his opponent, Gov. Sarah Palin vs. the scrutiny he has received-
“Let me tell you, I have a 36 year record, they have look not only in my closets, but under my floorboards, but look , I mean the scrutiny that I have received over the past 30 years is clear. I have a clear open record. I think the reason for the scrutiny of Sarah Palin is she is brand new, no one knew anything about her.”
On his statement that it is “patriotic” to pay taxes-
“With regard to the patriotic stuff, let me tell you what I am talking about. We allow under this administration and supporter by John McCain and Sarah Palin, when companies and wealthy individuals will take 100 billion dollars in profit and income they have made and put it into an offshore account in the cayman islands and shelter it so they don’t have to pay any taxes. Where I come from that’s unpatriotic. That is not putting America first and we are going to put an end to it.”
On the charges that Democrats are benefiting in the polls from the economic turmoil-
Hey look our people are the ones getting killed the people who are out there, hard working middle class people everyone from making minimum wage straight through to couples making $150,000 a year trying to raise a couple of kids, that is why we care about them…. Let me tell you something, this downturn in the economy cost retirees 2 trillion dollars, I think it is ridiculous for them to suggest that we find any glee in it, what we find is anger in the continuation of these absolute absurd policies that put us in this position.”
We should note (because we have already received complaints) that we did request a one on one interview with Governor Palin as well and our request was not granted. At this point Gov. Palin is the only candidate from the major parties running for President of Vice President that NBC12 has not interviewed one on one.
But, there is still time and our request to the campaign stands.
