Obama Counter-Programming From an Unlikely Source
Barack Obama comes to Richmond today, for what is sure to be a well attended, enthusiastic rally. But while the democratic nominee will dominate the headlines, there are still groups with a message counter to the Senator’s that will do their best to have their voice heard.
The McCain campaign has an event planned for later in the day, which I will talk about later, but it was an unlikely source that put out a missive this morning that surprised me.
A group called RVA4Peace, which is a very active progressive, anti-war group sent Senator Obama a letter today where they tell him that they are “concerned” about some of the votes he has cast as a member of the U.S. Senate. The group which describes themselves as Democrats say there were concerned about Obama’s support for the domestic surveillance program and the continued funding for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. They ask, in this letter, for Obama to “change”.
RVA4Peace is certainly a group of equal opportunity rabble-rousers. While they clearly are a liberal outfit, they do not let democratic or left-leaning candidates slide on issues they deem important in exchange for the “greater good.” They recently organized a protest of a fundraiser held by Jim Webb at the Jefferson in Richmond a few months ago.
This letter (which also offers members of the group up for media interviews) shows their commitment to their issues. Obama is often viewed as a savior for those on the left who are ready to get rid of George W. Bush. This group won’t let him slide, just because he might be a little better (in their view).

Dear Senator Obama,
We have serious concerns about some of the votes you have cast and legislation you have sponsored since you became a member of the United States Senate. We strongly suggest you reverse course on many issues beginning with your votes to fund the occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan that are bankrupting our country and our fellow citizens. We also urge you to work towards reinstating the Fourth Amendment that you helped render obsolete by voting to give retroactive immunity to the multinational telecommunications corporations that were illegally spying on our fellow citizens. We are demanding you cease sponsoring legislation that gives hundreds of billions to the coal industry which blows the tops off of mountains and contributes more to global warming than any other energy source.
We as Democratic voters are shocked that our nominee for president voted to reauthorize the Patriot Act and voted to confirm such US government war criminals as Chertoff, Gonzales, Rice and Negroponte. You have helped the ruling class at the expense of the average American worker by supporting the so-called bail out giving nearly a trillion dollars in tax payer money to the multinational banking industry.
We would love to support your candidacy, however, it seems your allegiance lies with the agenda of the military industrial complex, the energy industries and the multinational corporations over average American citizens. We demand that you stop violating the Constitution, destroying the planet and funding war crimes.
