Terry McAuliffe endorsed by Tom Daschle

It is not often that the endorsement from a former South Dakota senator resonates in the race for Governor of Virginia, but in light of the claims made by recently made by Brian Moran‘s campaign, it is not a surprise that Terry McAuliffe is trumpeting the endorsement of former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle

But it is one particular aspect of Daschle’s political career that the McAuliffe campaign is honing in on: his role as he national co-chair of Barack Obama‘s campaign for president.

The news comes after the repeated criticisms levied by the Moran campaign that McAuliffe was a less than enthusiastic supporter of the popular President. That same President who won both the general election and primary campaigns in Virginia by healthy margins. Moran’s camp released this radio ad at the end of the last week pointing out what they believe are the inconsistencies in McAuliffe’s work for Mr. Obama.

Of course this endorsement could come back to haunt McAuliffe if he is fortunate enough to earn the Democratic nomination. Senator Daschle’s last dance on a public stage came when he was forced to step away from his nomination as the Secretary of Health and Human Services after it was discovered that he had some tax issues.

But the Macker must win the nomination first and by tapping into one of the two national figures who were with Obama from almost the beginning (the other, ironically being Gov. Tim Kaine), McAuliffe is hoping to put this issue to rest.

Somehow, I don’t think it will be that easy.

The full statement from Senator Daschle is after the jump…

Obama National Co-Chair and Former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle Releases Statement in Support of Terry McAuliffe

Today, former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle, who served as a National Campaign Co-Chair for President Barack Obama, issued the following statement in support of gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe:

“As the national co-chair of Barack Obama’s presidential campaign and one of his earliest supporters, I was impressed by the time and energy Terry put into traveling across Virginia and the country on Barack Obama’s behalf during the general election.

“From the day Hillary Clinton ended her historic bid for president, Terry worked tirelessly to unify our party around Barack Obama and get him elected President. His energy and enthusiasm were tremendous assets on the campaign trail and we were grateful to have him on our side.

“Terry has decades of experience creating jobs and turning around struggling businesses, including bringing the Democratic National Committee out of debt for the first time in modern history. I believe this experience makes him uniquely qualified to be the next governor of Virginia and I support his candidacy.”
